Step-by-Step instructions to customize your free website.

Step 1: Create the Website (2 minutes)

  1. Click Here to open start the process in a new window.
  2. Click "Get Started Free"
  3. Create a Windows Live ID by entering your email address.
  4. Create a password for your account.
  5. Enter your name, zip code and the characters shown in the picture.

  6. Verify your email to activate your account.

  7. You will then be taken to your Windows Live Account, go to http://home.officelive.com/Settings/Pages/Home.aspx to access your website building tools.

  8. Click on "Get a Web address" to get your free domain name and email addresses branded with your domain name.
  9. Click on "Create a business Web site" to begin building your website with Microsoft's website builder.

Step 2: Customize Your Free Website (5 minutes)
(Make the website in the lower right picture)

  1. From the Office Live Small Business Home click on "Web Site" on the left.
  2. Click on "Site Actions" and activate advanced design features.
  3. Click on Design Site > Design Site.
  4. Select Theme > General (no photos).
  5. Select Colors > Pumpkin.
  6. Select Style > And choose the style with no designs on it (second design from the bottom).
  7. Go to Header > clear the Site Title and Site Slogan.
  8. Go to Logo > Upload your 640px wide and 132px tall header image.
  9. Go to Logo again > Select the image you just uploaded, select "Next to title" and Size Large (full size).
  10. Click on Style Sheet, select "Apply custom CSS code to my Web site" and add:

Step 3: Setup your free company domain branded email (2 minutes):

  1. Go to Account Settings > Domain Manager
  2. Go to the free domain name you have just received and Click on "Make Primary".
  3. Go to Account Settings > E-Mail Accounts and "Create New E-mail Account"
  4. Enter the desired email address and password to create you free email account with 10GB of storage space.

Step 4: Add a free newsletter tool to your website (5 minutes):

  1. When you go through the work of bringing visitors to your website make sure there is a way to get them to come back when you have new features or offers. (For retail businesses get them into your store when you offer coupons and discounts.)
  2. Go to Vertical Response and signup for a free account. You will be able to start building a list for free, if nobody signs up you loose nothing, but you don't miss the opportunity of getting signup's either. With Vertical Response you only pay when you send a newsletter out ($.015), so it's the best option for new websites and businesses.
  3. Sign into your Vertical Response account and select "Lists", below that select "Opt-In Forms" and "New Opt-In Form".
  4. Name your form and select the information you want to collect.
  5. When you get to "Publish" copy all the HTML code below "Publishing Options" (copy by selecting it all, right clicking and selecting copy).
  6. Go to your website site designer tool and go to the "Page Editor".
  7. Select where on the page yo want your opt-in form to appear and go up to "Modules > HTML". Paste the code in the box that appears and select OK.

Step 5: Continue to customize, grow and promote your new free business website!

  1. Explore your Microsoft Office Live Small Business Web Design Tool.
  2. You change text in the pages by clicking on the text, deleting it and typing in new text.
  3. Delete images by clicking on them and pressing delete.
  4. Add images by clicking on "Image" while in the Page Editor mode of the web design tool.
